About the Author

Dr. Jamila Battle is a compassionate and powerful woman tempered by the fire of years of abuse. She defied the odds and climbed out of the mayhem of her upbringing to achieve great success. She earned her way to a prestigious university and became a medical doctor with specialties in sleep, trauma (abuse), addiction, and mental health. Born in Atlanta, she moved to Los Angeles at the age of two. After 5 years, the family moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Raised in Chattanooga, Dr. Battle went to the Baylor School, a college preparatory high school. She attended Duke University for her undergraduate studies and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for medical school. Dr. Battle enjoyed all of her medical rotations and decided that family medicine was a great fit for her, because it respects all facets of the human body and focuses on prevention. Dr. Battle completed residency training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After completing her training, she returned to North Carolina as a consulting associate at Duke University. Dr. Battle, board certified in family, sleep, and addiction medicine, is the creator of “Reboot, Repair, Rebirth.” She now dedicates her life, love and passion to not only her family, but also to helping those who have been wounded as she was. She brings you the shining light of possibility and true hope for you to experience “Reboot, Repair, and Rebirth™” in your life. This innovative model aids women and their families who have suffered trauma to truly forgive themselves, so they can become fully integrated and capable of self-love. She believes the ability of the body, mind, and spirit to repair themselves is underutilized, and uninterrupted sleep is the foundation of repair and restoration. She is a consulting physician for Dr. Jamila Battle & Associates, PA where she provides supervision in the areas of family, addiction and sleep medicine and direct care services at a local practice. After reading about what our Daddy went through growing up, that man never had a chance in hell. It doesn't excuse what he did, but it gives clarity to WHY he did what he did. HURT PEOPLE, HURT PEOPLE. What a miserable way to live. I can't imagine the hell and the turmoil that must have been going on in his head ALL THE TIME. I know that no matter how good of a musician he was, no matter the accolades, no matter the admiration from the women, no matter the respect from his peers, at the end of the day Daddy had to live with himself. And I know that deep down he must have really hated himself. In the end, he did not have the courage, the tools, or the ability to overcome his demons. We are our Father's children. The way that he abused us and the dysfunctional paths that we took differed but the result was that at our core, we reflected the self-hate and lack of self-worth that Daddy instilled in us and perhaps had for himself. We carried that around for years and years allowing it to affect our lives and the lives of those around us. Fortunately, we were able to have people who came into our lives who would eventually show us that there was actually light at the end of the tunnel. That all life didn't have to be despair. But all they could really do was point the way. The crucial work of healing had to begin from within and by taking an honest look deep into the depths of our very souls. It is probably the hardest thing for an individual to do but it has to be done in order to break the cycle of dysfunction. It takes a great deal of courage and humility to look at yourself in the mirror and to accept it ALL, the good, the bad, and the ugly, without judgment, just pure acceptance. However, it is the first step to HEALING, to SELF-RESPECT and ultimately SELF-ACTUALIZATION. It is an ONGOING process, one that I suspect never ends. I am SO PROUD OF YOU, Jamila. I am proud to call you my Sister and I am grateful to The Creator and The Forces in the Universe for bringing us together at this point and time in life's journey. You are living, breathing proof that cycles of destruction can be overcome and that it is possible to start anew. You are an inspiration to my own process and a validation that our family's legacy is greater than what we come from. We do not have to be defined by our victimhood but can choose to be defined by our creativity by being the reflection of The Creator that we were born to be. <3

Let me start by saying I was hesitant to read the book. I thought I knew about domestic violence, and child abuse. . . well, it's a subject I didn't care to read about in my free time. I expected it to be a very didactic read (cue snoring). Boy was I wrong! From Abuse to Abundance is part novel part self-help, and no part of it is boring or preachy. Dr. Battle is an excellent story teller and from the prologue I was gripped! This account of a young girl's life is written in such a personal way you can't help but to become engrossed in the story line-- except you have to remind yourself it's not just a story line, IT'S REAL. I was so riveted I couldn't put it down and read the whole book in about 4 hours! The experiences of Dr. Battle's childhood and adolescence are heartbreaking to say the least, but to witness the process by which she overcame such deep trauma felt like virtual reality. She describes her memories and even her present state so vividly you feel as though you are going through the reboot, repair, and rebirth process together.I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has experienced family violence. I also recommend this book to educators, counselors, ministers/pastors, or anyone else who deals with children. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand domestic violence and/or child abuse. Reading this book will help you to recognize the signs and understand why it is so important to observe, act/report, and follow-up!! Dr. Battle is to be commended for sharing such personal information. By doing so, I fully believe she can potentially help millions of people. You need to read and tell others about this book!

From ABUSE to ABUNDANCE was a wonderful and uplifting read. Dr. J. Battle walks readers through a high level view of her traumatic life experiences on a path that serves as a field guide to trauma, teaching readers how to "Reboot, Repair, and Rebirth" their own lives as she has done with hers. Concepts that have taken me years in therapy to grasp are explained simply in this easy-to-read book that feels more memoir than how-to guide.I can't recommend this book enough; I've already started sending it as gifts and I'll be recommending it to my entire family and a bipolar disorder support group I co-facilitate. I think this book is a game changer, and I'm happy I bought a paperback for a change as there are some passages in bold that serve as great daily affirmations. This is a book I'll be re-reading. I encourage you to purchase a paperback and share it with the world when you finish with it.Chapter 44 is "Weight Loss and Sweet Dreams". Dr. J 'rambles' a bit here talking in "medical mumbo-jumbo" about the importance of sleep, specifically REM sleep. The moral of the chapter? Sleep is important, and "you may need a sleep study". As for me? I recommend you get one at Parkway SleepHealth Centers in NC, where Jamila Battle, M.D is the Medical Director. Dr. Battle is my sleep doctor, and she was the doctor that diagnosed my narcolepsy. Small world, right? She didn't know I lived a traumatic life when she told me about herself and her book months ago, but I was in foster care from age 13-17 and I put myself through engineering school. At 24, I still have some repairing and rebirthing to do, but Dr. Battle's story is inspiring and I'm well on my way to rebirthing my inner wounded child like she has done.For those that have suffered trauma, Dr. Battle makes one reference in the book: Seeking Safety: A Treatment Manual for PTSD and Substance Abuse (Guilford Substance Abuse). I'll be purchasing this for my therapist as I am always looking for help with my PTSD. Curious about narcolepsy?
