The doctor has no explanation (none is ever offered), but Patrick's dad points out that flamingos in Africa are pink and at least half are boys. Tired of being teased, Patrick swims to Africa and tries, unsuccessfully, to fit in with the friendly flamingos. Returning home, he is welcomed and respected for his adventure, and happily resigns himself to being forever pink: Being different wasn't so bad after all. Although Chamberlain's comical illustrations suit the exclamatory tone of the text, the book is loud and busy. Blurring a retro message about gender coding with a lesson about difference, the story fails to inspire sympathy for Patrick or offer solace to kids who might share Patrick's feelings. Design choices don't help; the erratic placement of text turns many pages into a jumble of words fighting for space with the images. Ages 4–8. (Jan.)

This rehashing of the theme of accepting one's differences includes humor, but Patrick's classmates' turnaround is a bit facile, and nothing is truly new here. Charmberlain's bright cartoon illustrations are reminiscent of Mary Murphy's work, although somewhat more detailed. Patrick is, well, very pink, with his feet an impressive shade of fuchsia. While the text is set in a typeface that can be hard to decipher at times, the story reads aloud smoothly and reflects a childlike sensibility. However, some literal-minded youngsters may want a bit more explanation for why the penguin became pink and whether or not he will stay that way. Returning home, he finds that his dichromatic friends are fascinated by his adventure and immediately accept him back, resulting in the facile and inevitable conclusion that “Being different wasn’t so bad after all.” The plot and text are unrefined, and it’s uncertain whether this is trying to be a story about exotic birds, gender identity, self-acceptance, or all three. The art makes the strongest statement, with thick lines and distinct, bright, eye-catching colors.

About the Author

Muhammad Yusuf Saleem was born in Afghanistan. He obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from International Islamic University Malaysia in 1992, where he also studied his Master of Comparative Laws (MCL) and obtained a PhD in 2003. He is currently an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University, Malaysia. He has taught a series of courses on Fiqh for Economist, Islamic Transactions (Mu'amalat), Islamic Jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh), Islamic banking and finance, zakat, waqf and Islamic law of inheritance (Faraidh). He has also taught Islamic Finance, and Fiqh al-mu'amalt courses for postgraduate students at the Graduate School of Management and at the IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance. Dr. Saleem contributed several articles to various local and international journals. He has participated and presented papers in international conferences in Kuala Lumpur, Dhaka, Jeddah, and Bahrain. Among his works are An Introduction to the Theoretical Foundations of Islamic Transactions, Muslim Powerlessness and the Nation-state, Methods and Methodologies in Fiqh and Islamic Economics, Mutawalli Institutions for the Management of Waqf Properties, Form v. Substance in Islamic Banking and Financial Transactions, and the Application of Ibra and Muqassah to House Financing Contracts.

An excellent textbook. Conveys difficult pieces of information in a manner that is light and friendly; especially to students who are relatively new to the subject. I enjoy how the book takes an integrated approach to learning; navigating the reader towards different chapters that have relatable scientific information. About the Author

Dr. Jill Barber studied Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge and completed a PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry at the same university in 1980. She then spent five years in some of the oldest universities in Europe, learning Biochemistry, German, and Renaissance Music. She settled in Manchester in 1986, with a permanent position in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Her research focuses on drugs that inhibit protein synthesis and she teaches chemotherapy and its underlying chemistry and biochemistry. She has published several teaching-related research papers about the factors influencing student success.

Dr. Chris Rostron graduated in Pharmacy from Manchester University and completed a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry at Aston University. He gained Chartered Chemist status in 1975. After a period of post-doctoral research he was appointed as a lecturer in Medicinal Chemistry at Liverpool Polytechnic. He is now an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at Liverpool John Moores University. He was a member of the Academic Pharmacy Group Committee of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and chairman for five years. He is currently chairman of the Academic Pharmacy Forum and deputy chair of the Education Expert Advisory Panel of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. He is an external examiner in Medicinal Chemistry at a number of schools of pharmacy both in the UK and abroad. In 2008 he was awarded honorary membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain for services to pharmacy education.

From the Back Cover This fifth volume in a new and definitive seven-volume edition in English of the works of Michal Kalecki contains his studies on the theory and practice of economic development. The first part of the book is devoted to general problems of economic underdevelopment. 'Observations on Social and Economic Aspects of "Intermediate Regimes"' is his best-known paper here, but the other two papers are equally important for the understanding of Kalecki's approach to problems of the underdeveloped non-socialist countries. In Part 2, 'The Problem of Financing Economic Development', published in Mexico in 1953, attracted great interest and possibly gave rise to a new school of thought (that is to Structuralism) in development economics. Part 3 contains Kalecki's four empirical case-studies on the economic development of underdeveloped countries which are deeply rooted in their specific social and political conditions. The editorial notes and annexes at the end of the volume not only provide invaluable background information and explanatory glossing to the main texts, but also give - in many cases for the first time in published form - invaluable insights into the development of Kalecki's thought.
