Firstly I would like to get a bit of unpleasantness out of the way. This novel, the first in a series of historical novels concerning the French monarchy. That means that for a person adept only in the English language, there will be many trials and challenges awaiting the reader involving pronouncing those lovely French names, titles, and terms. This difficulty in no way affects how I feel about the absorbing tale Maurice Druon has written. I take full responsibility for my linguistic shortcomings.Philip IV or Philip the Fair as he is commonly referred to is the titular character of the Iron King and I found him to be an intriguing character who is able to reveal to us a cold and sometimes cruel persona, but also a man capable of gentleness and caring. It is alluded to a few times in the book that he seems almost inhuman or otherworldly because of his statuesque demeanor and his icy, unblinking stare.Perhaps my favorite character in the story is Beatrice who is in service to Mahaut. Beatrice was not featured near enough in my opinion but I suppose that added to the mystery that surrounded her since her introduction. She seemed to know a thing or two about sorcery which automatically thrust her to the top of interesting characters for me. It's also the cavalier manner in which she acts, making her seem almost otherworldly as well.I could go on about each character and family involved in the story but I will conclude my review on a positive note: if you enjoy medieval tales of courtly intrigue and especially if you enjoy the Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin then the Iron King will be a welcome read. I look forward to the Strangled Queen and I anticipate my review for it to be posted quite soon.

The Iron King is terrific. So much historical fiction today is thinly disguised romance (the recent novels of Sharon Penman spring to mind). Maurice Druon doesn't make the mistake of romanticizing history. The Iron King is the pellucid tale of Phillip the Fair, who found France fractured like a medieval Humpty Dumpty and set about putting it back together again. Through sheer force of will and a combination of dastardly deeds he succeeds spectacularly.To achieve his goals Phillip needs money. What he doesn't have, the Knights Templar do, so he ruthlessly and single-mindedly goes about taking what isn't his. Recent historians have been kinder to Phillip, pointing out the Knights Templar who returned from the crusades brought with them Christian rituals foreign to western Europeans that could indeed seem heretical. A few have argued (unconvincingly, I think) Phillip regarded their destruction as his duty. Surely if so he would not have pilfered their coffers but given the money to Mother Church.Regardless, Druon doesn't indulge in simplistic interpretations. The Phillip he presents is something of an enigma and therefore it is up to the reader to determine just how venal and mendacious the French king was. My conclusion was, very. If one is know by the company one keeps, his ministers Marigny and Nogaret attest to his cruelty and selfishness. Either would have felt right at home in the Gestapo. Phillip's and their relentless persecution of Jews and Templars (15,000 by some accounts( belies a saintly temperament.I thoroughly enjoyed the author's of daughter Isabelle: cold, beautiful and seething with rage against a husband (Edward II of England) who has publicly shamed her with his infatuation for young men. I have always wondered how the three wives of Phillip's sons could have been so errantly stupid. Yet when you meet them and their husbands (particularly the heir Louis), it's not so surprising they would take lovers. Druon convincingly makes Isabelle their nemesis from bitterness and hate and their exposure and disgrace is very well done. There is also a delightful sorceress who likes to pretend the lover she's copulating with is actually the Devil. Only the French....Like Phillip, I pitied a France that had Louis in the wings as heir, and was hoping against history the famous (though certainly apocryphal) Grand Master's curse would fall one short. Alas, it was not to be. Phillip follows Boniface and Nogaret to the bowels of hell....or thereabouts. Can't wait to read The Strangled Queen.

This sets the stage for the rest of the series. Eminently readable, I especially enjoyed the author’s philosophical comments on human behavior. I only wish the author had other series. The tale of the destruction of the Knights Templar and the view that the curse of the dying leaders affected the French throne as well as the English lends an inevitability to history already known. The entire series is an excellent read, and the author is more historically accurate than most of the historical fiction genre.

First, I read Maurice Druon's epic in French a long, long, time ago. Won't say how long. I have also watched both French TV versions. This is French History put in a novel form. Maurice Druon very much stays with the facts and this may make for a slower book than most people want in an historical fiction. I love it. I said "Finally" because the only english versions of these books that are currently on sale are usually very old and very expensive. I have my French set that I can read but it is really nice to be able to sit with my Kindle and enjoy these books. Also, my husband is very excited since he does not read French and has wanted to read these books.I hope the next books become available soon. I hope we don't have to wait a year between books. I just wish they had made all the books available as one large Kindle book.If you like fact based historical fiction you will enjoy these books. So much is written about English history, especially the Tudors, that you may enjoy reading about a new part of history.

Not exactly Game of Thrones, but pretty absorbing nonetheless -- and you learn some history in the process. This series is a great read -- I am on Book III at present, and it's difficult to out down. It does help if you have some French language background in order to be able to mentally pronounce the many French names and locales; I have that background, but I can see how this might be a frustrating aspect for for others that do not.

About the Author

HIROMI ITABASHI is best known for his abstract ceramic sculptures. Itabashi's apprenticeship began with participation in archaeological digs on traditional pottery sites in Korea. After studying local traditions in Gifu Prefecture, he joined the studio of master potter Keiji Ito. He opened his own potter studio in Mitaka, Tokyo, in 1980 and began teaching at Tama Arts University in 1999. He has taught and exhibited widely overseas, and received numerous awards in Japan and internationally.

ROPPO TAMURA began his training in the late 1970s as an abstract painter in oils, but he gradually turned his attention to sculpture and finally to the creation of ceramic objets. He built his first kiln, a noborigama, or multi-chambered climbing kiln, in Nagano Prefecture in 1982, where he was studying pottery under the direction of potter friends. In 1985 he built a single-chambered anagama kiln, which, though smaller, he realized was better suited to his needs. At this time he was still experimenting with various different types of pottery-creating plain and undecorated functional ware and objets that made use of natural ash glaze, and also artificially glazed Shino ware. He moved to Yamanashi Prefecture in 1991.

NAOKI KAWABUCHI began making pottery in 1974 and has gained an international reputation for the originality and creativity of his undecorated stoneware, and in particular for his ware done in the Nanban style. His work in the Iga and Shigaraki traditions is also highly regarded. In one of his individual shows, Kawabuchi exhibited an astonishing 10,000 individual tea bowls. Apart from a year spent studying earthenware firing techniques with a master potter, he is largely self-taught.

Freshmen and sophomores often have little substantive knowledge of professional engineering practice; indeed, these students may have many misconceptions about the actual work that engineers perform and the types of problems with which they wrestle. The initial chapters and case histories of this book will give students a limited but informed understanding of the engineering profession. Later material (including case problems through which students can apply their newly acquired knowledge of design) then broadens and deepens this understanding, and this material can be used in a wide variety of courses including senior capstone project classes. A list of appropriate courses is given later in this preface. Through this approach, students discover the need to formulate problems correctly work successfully in interdisciplinary teams develop their creativity, imagination, and analytical skills make informed ethical decisions hone their written and oral communication skills Most important, they learn that engineering is a service profession, dedicated to satisfying humanity's needs through responsible, methodical, and creative problem solving. This second edition of Engineering by Design includes expanded coverage of several important topics, including teamwork skills and tools, Gantt charts, problem formulation strategies, engineering graphics and sketching, and creativity stimulation techniques. Moreover, numerous additional case histories have been incorporated into the text. Structure Case Histories Engineering By Design introduces students to such critical design topics as needs assessment, problem formulation, modeling, patents, abstraction and synthesis, economic analysis, product liability, ergonomics, engineering ethics, hazards analysis, design for X, materials selection, and manufacturing processes. The engineering design process provides the skeletal structure for the text, around which are wrapped numerous case histories that illustrate both successes and failures in engineering design. According to Larry Richards, Director of the Center for Computer Aided Engineering at the University of Virginia, engineering cases generally fall into one of three categories. They are case studies, case histories, and case problems. A case study presents an ideal or benchmark solution that may serve as a model for future work. In contrast, a case history describes how a problem was solved, and points out the consequences of the decisions that were made. This text contains numerous case histories; the more extensive ones have been collected at the end of each chapter so that they will not interrupt the flow of material in the chapters. Each case history has been selected to illustrate a particular principle, procedure, or lesson in the text. Students and faculty can use these case histories as important resources for study, reflection, and discussion. Design Project Assignment Template The text ends with a unique Design Project Assignment Template (immediately following Chapter 11) that the instructor can use to select and assign tasks to students who are working on a design project. With this template, instructors can directly correlate their students' efforts on a project with appropriate material from each chapter of this text. Of course, not all assignments need to be performed; the template provides a "menu" from which instructors can select tasks and topics that they wish to emphasize. This template also provides an abbreviated summary of the text with key concepts highlighted in bold type. Students can use this template to review and correlate the critical elements of the design process as they develop an overall perspective of the material presented throughout the text. If a term or concept in the template is not understood completely, the student should recognize that lack of understanding or comfort with the concept as a warning flag. The student should then return to the (referenced) section in the text in which the concept is discussed and study further. Through such efforts, the template can serve as an important learning aid. A sample section of the design template is shown in Figure P.1 Case Problems Finally, a case problem sets forth an open-ended (perhaps unsolved) situation that leaves the solution up to the reader. It can be a learning module designed to put students to work in teams to define the problem and solve it through research, discussion, and/or lab work. Four extended case problems have been prepared for use as active learning modules; they follow the Design Project Assignment Template. Each of these case problems contains a substantial amount of background information, as well as proposed or existing solutions, so that students will be able to "hit the ground running" if any of these problems is chosen for a design project. Moreover, these case problem modules serve as examples of the depth, breadth, and type of information that one should acquire about a technical problem before embarking upon the development of a design solution. The background material in each problem provides sufficient information to understand the general parameters and factors that must be considered during a design effort; however, students should seek additional information beyond that contained in the case problems. Immediately following the four case problems is a list of 50 case problem topics, which describe situations that call for engineering design solutions. Since these descriptions are very brief, students will need to research the background and current status of each situation. Again, the four extended case problem modules described above can serve as examples of the type of background data that should be collected via such research.

If you are taking an engineering design class or working on an engineering design project then this book is helpful and informative. There are a lot of relevant case studies and design processes outlined that can be useful as you consider the important components of your design. So far my design group has used some of the procedures in the book to help clarify primary design goals and specifications we need to consider as we begin to plan our design. If you are just looking for a fun and interesting read about engineering design, then this probably is not the right book for you though.

I needed this book for class and ordered it fairly lst minute. It arrived promtly and although it was not in the pristine condition that "very good" condition books often are, the price was low and I am pleased.
